Parents condemn school for outing nonbinary twins

Parents in North Carolina have criticized Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy for outing their nonbinary six-year-old twins. In addition, there was the discovery of an online hate campaign. Mortellus, a transgender and nonbinary parent, and their spouse Joe, were initially assured of the school’s support for their children’s gender identities and needs during their visit.

However, a month later, Mortellus found that their children’s gender identities had been leaked to other parents. Thus, sparking an outcry against the school’s enrollment policies. This led to online petitions and heated discussions among parents. As a result, some of whom objected to the inclusion of nonbinary students and gender-neutral bathrooms.

“I felt nauseous. I felt sad. I battled with myself over what the right reaction was… but settled on anger,” Mortellus told Buzzfeed.

They expressed concern for their children’s safety and criticized the school for not informing them about the leak.

The controversy culminated in a meeting where parents voiced their concerns. Many opposed the inclusion of gender-neutral bathrooms. Also, they questioned the children’s understanding of gender identity. Only one community member supported the inclusion.

Mortellus defended their actions, stating they only sought what school policies already permitted and emphasized the importance of respecting their children’s identities. They highlighted that their children are just as capable of understanding their gender identity as any other child, pointing out that societal norms often villainize non-normative gender identities.

The school issued a statement affirming its compliance with state and federal laws and clarified that parents can decide their children’s participation in certain curriculums. They reiterated that instruction on gender identity and sexuality is not included in the curriculum for kindergarten through fourth grade.
