Ziwe pressed Wanda Sykes on the racial makeup of her household and social circle during an interview on her YouTube series. The conversation, which ran about three minutes and 22 seconds, did not open with a conventional greeting. Ziwe immediately asked Sykes about being the only Black person in her nuclear family. Sykes has a white wife and two white twin children.
Ziwe then asked Sykes to name five Black friends. Sykes first refused, saying she has “too many to count” and “hundreds.” She then named Amy Schumer before listing a series of first names. The exchange, shared by @killakreww on X, has drawn 1.5 million views and thousands of replies, with reactions split between amusement and criticism.
The Only Black Person in the Room
The family facts Sykes has discussed in her stand-up for years were the starting point. She has a white wife, Alex Niedbalski, and two white twin children, Olivia Lou and Lucas Claude. Ziwe said Sykes has described herself as “Black excellence” and asked whether they should “unpack the fact that you’re the only Black person in your nuclear family.”
Sykes did not deny the premise. She answered in the same comic register she has used on stage for years. “I take care of white people,” she said. “That’s what I do.” She then addressed Harriet Tubman directly: “You hear that, Miss Tubman? That’s what I’m doing. You got me.”
The Harriet Tubman address was a callback to an earlier question in the same episode about how Sykes would describe today’s political news cycle to Tubman. Sykes had answered by asking Tubman to take her to freedom. In the later moment, she treated Tubman as an offstage witness to her household arrangement.

A repeated claim was that some Black celebrities preach racial solidarity and then form white households. One widely liked reply stated that “most of the woke Black celebrities do this.” Others said they were “looking at Wanda funny” after the clip. Some users defended Sykes. They noted she has told the “I take care of white people” joke for years. They said naming friends on camera is an awkward demand. Others treated the whole exchange as in-group roasting rather than an exposé.
Multiple posts highlighted that Sykes named Amy Schumer before producing Black names. Some said the names she gave sounded generic or incomplete. One user said it was “bananas” that Chris Rock was not named. A smaller set argued Ziwe was “going for the neck.” Appearance jokes also circulated.

That device originated in interviews with white guests who had been criticized on race. Applying it to a Black guest is a later variation.
Sykes has discussed the racial composition of her household in specials and interviews for years. She has used the line “I take care of white people” and “I am now a minority in my own home” on stage. The “take care of white people” line is not new in this interview. It is Sykes’s own long-running bit. In the Ziwe conversation, she deployed it as both punchline and concession.

But while most of the comedians were getting sitcoms on UPN, hers was on The WB. Still, it was an early vehicle for Dave Chappelle. Regarding her sexuality, Sykes came out at a time when it was not as accepted as it is now. She even starred in LGBT commercials during that period of time.
