Lil Durk Trial Nears Closing Arguments After Both Sides Rest

Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial has reached its final stage.

The prosecution and defense both rested their cases on Thursday, September 3. Now, the courtroom will move toward closing arguments and jury deliberations. The court currently expects closing arguments to begin Tuesday, September 8.

Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, has spent nearly two years in federal custody while fighting charges connected to an alleged plot against rapper Quando Rondo.

The case centers on a 2022 Los Angeles shooting. Rondo survived the attack, but his cousin, Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, died.

Now, both sides have finished presenting evidence. The jury will soon hear the final arguments before deciding whether prosecutors proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Lil Durk Will Not Take The Stand

Durk will not testify in his own defense.

Journalist Michael Blackshire reported Thursday that Durk and his two co-defendants, Deandre “OTF Dede” Wilson and David “Browneyez” Lindsey, will not take the stand.

That decision closes the door on the possibility of jurors hearing directly from the three men about their alleged roles in the case.

Prosecutors accuse Durk of organizing the alleged murder-for-hire plot. They also accuse Wilson of helping coordinate logistics and Lindsey of serving as one of the alleged gunmen.

The three men will leave those allegations unanswered from the witness stand.

Still, Durk does not have to testify. The law does not require a criminal defendant to prove his innocence. Instead, prosecutors must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

That burden remains with the government throughout the trial.

Defense Points To OTF Vonnie

Durk’s attorneys have taken a different approach throughout the trial.

The defense has focused heavily on Kavon “OTF Vonnie” Grant. Prosecutors previously charged Vonnie in connection with the case, and he later testified against Durk and others.

Durk’s lawyers have argued that Vonnie played the central role in planning the attack on Quando Rondo.

That argument gives the jury an alternative version of the events.

Prosecutors have relied on testimony from Vonnie and other cooperating witnesses to build their case against Durk. The defense, meanwhile, has challenged the credibility of those witnesses and questioned the government’s overall narrative.

Vonnie’s testimony could become a major point during closing arguments.

Durk’s attorneys can use their final presentation to remind jurors of testimony they believe raises questions about Vonnie’s credibility. They can also argue that prosecutors failed to establish Durk’s involvement with enough evidence.

The jury will ultimately decide which interpretation of the evidence makes the most sense.

Defense Calls Several Witnesses

Durk’s legal team called several witnesses during its portion of the trial.

Kevin Freeman, who works with Durk’s Neighborhood Heroes nonprofit organization, testified for the defense. Durk’s sound engineer Justin Gibson also took the stand.

The defense also called OTF Jam’s wife and his former girlfriend, Briana Dangerfield.

Other defense witnesses included Tonya Johnican, the sister of Durk’s former security guard Big Country, former Alamo Records executive Sanchay “Dharmic” Jain and Shekema “Queen Kema” Springfield, the mother of one of King Von’s children.

Their testimony gave the defense an opportunity to provide additional context about Durk’s relationships, career and personal life.

The defense also sought to weaken the government’s witnesses and challenge the prosecution’s interpretation of events.

That strategy now moves into its final phase.

The Case Centers On Quando Rondo Shooting

The federal case stems from a shooting in Los Angeles on August 19, 2022.

Prosecutors allege that the attack targeted Quando Rondo as retaliation for the 2020 killing of King Von.

Durk and Von had a close personal and professional relationship. Prosecutors have argued that Durk wanted revenge after Von’s death.

The shooting did not kill Rondo.

Instead, Robinson, his cousin, died after the alleged gunmen opened fire.

According to testimony presented during the trial, prosecutors have attempted to connect Durk to the alleged effort through cooperating witnesses, communications and other evidence.

The defense has rejected the government’s version of events.

Durk has pleaded not guilty and maintains that he had nothing to do with the shooting. His attorneys have instead pointed toward Vonnie as the person who orchestrated the attack.

Prosecutors Presented Their Own Evidence

The government’s case has included testimony from several cooperating witnesses.

Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester, Keith “Flacka” Jones and Kavon “OTF Vonnie” Grant have all testified against Durk, according to reports from the trial.

Their testimony has provided prosecutors with accounts of the alleged conspiracy and the events surrounding the shooting.

Prosecutors have also introduced other evidence as they attempt to establish Durk’s motive and alleged involvement.

One recent example came when prosecutors showed jurors what they described as an “Opp List” connected to Durk. The list reportedly included Quando Rondo, NBA YoungBoy, 6ix9ine and others.

Prosecutors have also played recordings and presented social media evidence during the trial.

The defense now has the opportunity to tell jurors how they should interpret that evidence.

Durk Recently Broke His Silence

While Durk has not testified, he recently sent a brief message to his followers.

The Chicago rapper posted “Allah Is The Greatest” on Instagram during the trial.

The message represented one of his few public statements while his case moved through federal court.

Durk’s decision not to testify means jurors will not hear his personal account of the allegations under oath.

However, his attorneys can still argue that the government failed to prove its case.

That distinction matters.

The jury does not need to decide whether Durk proved his innocence. Jurors must decide whether prosecutors proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Closing Arguments Come Next

With both sides finished, closing arguments represent the next major step.

The court currently expects attorneys to begin closing arguments on Tuesday, September 8. Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald has also indicated that jury deliberations could begin Tuesday or Wednesday.

Closing arguments will give both sides one final chance to address the jury.

Prosecutors will likely highlight the testimony and evidence they believe connect Durk to the alleged plot.

The defense will counter by pointing to inconsistencies, witness credibility issues and evidence it believes supports reasonable doubt.

Neither side can introduce new evidence during closing arguments. Instead, attorneys must work with the evidence already presented during the trial.

That makes the closing arguments especially important.

Each side will attempt to give jurors a clear framework for understanding the testimony and evidence they have heard over the course of the trial.

Jury Will Decide Durk’s Fate

After closing arguments, Judge Fitzgerald will instruct the jury on the law.

The jurors will then begin deliberations.

No one knows how long that process will take.

The jury could reach a decision quickly. It could also spend several days reviewing the evidence and discussing the charges.

The complexity of the case could play a major role in the length of deliberations.

Jurors will have to consider the prosecution’s evidence, the defense’s arguments and the credibility of the witnesses who testified.

They must ultimately determine whether the government met its burden of proof.

Lil Durk Trial Enters Final Phase

After nearly two years of legal proceedings, Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial is approaching its conclusion.

Both sides have rested their cases. Durk will not testify. Neither will Wilson or Lindsey.

The defense has pointed to OTF Vonnie as the alleged mastermind behind the attack. Prosecutors, meanwhile, continue to argue that Durk played a central role in the alleged plot against Quando Rondo.

Now, the attorneys will make their final pitches to the jury.

Closing arguments should begin September 8. Jury deliberations could follow shortly afterward.

For Durk, the next few days could become the most important stretch of the entire case.

The jury will soon decide whether prosecutors proved their allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. After months of legal battles and years of waiting, the case is finally approaching its verdict.
